What Does the Junior Commission Do?

Ad Hoc Committees & Community Service

The Junior Commissioner Project is structured around project-based learning and advocacy. Juniors break into groups to learn more about specific issues facing women and girls today, and create a community service-related project to accompany this learning. Ad hoc committee projects in the past have included drawing more girls into the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) fields; conducting media and computer workshops to residents of assisted living facilities; and educating peers on the existence of human trafficking in Sonoma County.

Career Panel and Political Panel

Each year Junior Commissioners participate in a career panel of Sonoma County female leaders in their profession. The professions represented are generally chosen by the juniors themselves. Additionally, some years have included a political panel of Sonoma County female elected and appointed officials as well.

Participate in Commission Events

Junior Commissioners work with adult Commissioners on various signature events put on by the Commission on the Status of Women:

  • One Billion Rising Revolution -- a local event in conjunction with the global movement to eradicate the violence against women organized by V-Day.
  • Women Creating A Better Tomorrow Award Luncheon -- recognizing women who have made significant contributions to bettering the lives of the people in our community; proceeds benefiting a scholarship at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Participate in Legislative Day

Junior Commissioners meet with local and state elected officials -- typically during a field trip to the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Report to Commissioners

Junior Commissioners research and issue of importance to young people in Sonoma County and present their findings to the Commission

Report to Elected Officials

Junior Commissioners present the results of their ad hoc committee work to the Board of Supervisors at the end of their term.
