Elderberry Commons completes transition to permanent supportive housing

SEBASTOPOL, CA | March 17, 2025

The necessary renovations to Elderberry Commons in Sebastopol are now complete, and residents have begun moving into the permanent supportive housing site. The first residents began moving in on March 3, and the remaining residents are expected to complete their move by the end of the month.

“This reopening marks a significant step forward in addressing housing needs and creating a stronger, more resilient community,“ said Sonoma County Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, whose district includes the Elderberry Commons. “Focusing on long-term housing, the site is not just providing shelter but the means for individuals to thrive and rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.”

Elderberry Commons, located at 6751 Sebastopol Ave., has undergone extensive renovations and is now equipped with modern amenities and kitchenettes. Part of the transition includes offering residents support services through West County Community Services to help individuals and families with additional needs that may be required.

Elderberry Commons, formerly known as the Sebastopol Inn, was purchased in 2020 through Project Homekey, a program by the state of California that provides local government agencies with funds to purchase and rehabilitate housing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the site was used temporarily as a non-congregate shelter until last year, when renovations to transition to permanent housing began.

Elderberry Commons is an important housing asset for Sebastopol and for the county as a whole in reducing homelessness. Its transition into Permanent Supportive Housing is key to reaching long-term solutions to homelessness.
