For Immediate Release
Development underway for permanent supportive housing project at George’s Hideaway
SANTA ROSA, CA | December 20, 2024
Demolition has begun at George’s Hideaway, the former tavern and restaurant in west Sonoma County, making way for permanent supportive housing. The project at George’s Hideaway, located along Highway 116 in Guerneville, involves the creation of 21 units of permanent supportive housing and a navigation center.
“I have made it a top priority to provide solutions for residents of the west county who are impacted by homelessness,” said Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, whose district includes Guerneville. “George’s Hideaway is a big step in the right direction.”
The Board of Supervisors on Sept. 10 approved the transfer of the property to Burbank Housing, which will transform the property. The site will be managed by Burbank Housing while West County Community Services will provide supportive services.
The Sonoma County Community Development Commission officially transferred the property to Burbank Housing on December 4 after all permits and approvals were obtained. The demolition process is expected to be completed by the end of December, weather permitting, and occupancy will begin in late fall of 2025.
George's Hideaway will serve households with annual incomes of no more than 30 percent of the area median income for Sonoma County, classified as "extremely low-income" households. A one-person household would have to make $29,050 or less to qualify.
In addition to the 21 units of permanent supportive housing planned for the site, a navigation center will also be constructed. This center will serve as a vital resource, providing a variety of services aimed at helping individuals access housing, employment, health care, and other essential resources not only to residents but also to other individuals in the community who are experiencing homelessness. The navigation center will play a crucial role in supporting immediate and long-term needs to improve long-term housing sustainability.
The George’s Hideaway project is in part funded by federal, state and local funds, including Project Homekey funds, which is a state program intended to expand the supply of housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
