Acceptable Specimens

  • Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in a tube of viral transport media (VTM or UTM).
  • Use synthetic-tipped swabs only.
  • Each specimen must be labeled with the patient’s first and last names, patient’s date of birth, specimen date of collection, and specimen type.
  • Best collected within the first 24-72 hours of symptom onset, and no later than 5 days after symptom onset.

Specimen Rejection Criteria

  • Cotton or calcium alginate swabs
  • Swabs in Amies medium
  • Inadequately labeled specimens
  • Leaking specimens

Specimen Storage

Store specimens in the refrigerator.

Specimen Transport

Transport specimens to the lab within 5 days on cold packs.

If specimen cannot be received by the lab within 5 days, freeze at -70°C or below and ship on dry ice.

Setup Days

Testing is performed on an as-needed basis.

Turn-around-time

Results will be available 1-2 days upon arrival at the lab.
