Why Are the American Independent and Libertarian Parties Missing?

County central committees can elect their members in two ways:

  1. Utilizing the public ballot
  2. By holding a caucus or convention, or by "any other method of selection approved by the committee" (California Elections Code §§ 7225, 7420, 7670, 7750)

For 2024, only four of the six qualified political parties in California requested that the public ballot be used to elect their committee members (the Democratic Party, Green Party, Peace and Freedom Party, and Republican Party). The American Independent Party notified the California Secretary of State that it would not be using the public ballot in 2024. The Sonoma County Libertarian Party never indicated interest in utilizing the public ballot.
