What Precinct Numbers Mean
There are two main types of precincts: regular precincts and consolidated precincts.
Regular precincts are the smallest geographic unit for which voter data is compiled and aggregated. Regular precincts usually stay the same from one election to the next. The maps above display the boundaries of regular precincts.
Consolidated precincts are election-specific. They consist of a combination of two or more regular precincts.
In Sonoma County, all precincts (both regular and consolidated) consist of seven digits. The first digit is always zero. The second digit can be 1-5 or 7 (never 6, 8, or 9):
- If the second digit is 1-5, it's a regular precinct. The second digit indicates the supervisorial district, the third digit indicates the city/town/area (see table below), and the remaining four digits are random. Example: 0440001 would be in Supervisorial District 4 and the City of Healdsburg.
- If the second digit is 7, it's a consolidated precinct. The third digit indicates the supervisorial district, the fourth digit indicates the city/town/area (see table below), and the remaining three digits are random. Example: 0736011 would be in Supervisorial District 3 and the City of Rohnert Park.
