County of Sonoma Advisory Redistricting Commission to host a virtual workshop and public hearing

Santa Rosa,CA | July 15, 2021

The County of Sonoma Advisory Redistricting Commission (ARC) invites the Sonoma County community to participate in a virtual redistricting workshop on Monday, July 26 2021 at 4 p.m.

Every 10 years, local governments use data from the Census to redraw their district lines to reflect how local populations have changed. Redistricting determines which neighborhoods and communities are grouped together into a district for purposes of electing members to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. Community participation is strongly encouraged to ensure district lines respect neighborhoods, communities of interest, history and geographical elements.

The virtual workshop will allow community members to learn more about redistricting and provide their input on where district lines should be drawn to best represent their community. Participants will also learn how to draw and submit a redistricting map.

In addition to the workshop, the ARC will also host a similar opportunity to gather valuable input through a virtual public hearing on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 6:15 p.m.

Meeting information, such as meeting links and agendas, will be available on the County’s dedicated redistricting webpage at sonomacounty.ca.gov/redistricting. The webpage includes a variety of resources including meeting recordings, background information on redistricting, a tentative schedule of participation opportunities, frequently asked questions and resources for drafting maps and sharing feedback on previously drawn maps. After the 2020 Census, finalized demographic data has been made available and additional mapping tools will be added to the website so residents can provide detailed feedback. The County is also coordinating with community-based organizations to ensure widespread awareness of the redistricting process and understand how individuals can get involved.

To sign up to receive updates about the redistricting process, future public meetings, ask questions or recommend a community group for the County to reach out to, please email Redistricting2021@sonoma-county.org.
