Sonoma County to host two meetings to solicit public input on emergency housing sites for unsheltered people

SANTA ROSA, CA | February 23, 2023

County officials are inviting the public to take part in one of two meetings over the next week to discuss a plan to create emergency housing sites for unsheltered people on the county campus and potentially on one additional site, possibly at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building. These community meetings are in response to actions taken during a special Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday to address the growing homeless encampment on the Joe Rodota Trail.

The first meeting will be held via Zoom on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. and will focus on the creation of an emergency housing site on the County Administration Center campus in Santa Rosa. The webinar, which also will be streamed live via the county’s Facebook page, will feature a panel of county officials who will explain the plans for these sites and how they will be managed. They also will be inviting neighbors and members of the public to offer feedback and share concerns. The second meeting, also on Zoom, will be on Monday at 5 p.m. to address the possibility of a site at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building.

Who: Panelists will include Chris Coursey, Chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor James Gore, whose district includes the county campus, Department of Health Services Department Director Tina Rivera, Department of Health Services Homelessness Services Division Director Dave Kiff, and Deputy County Counsel Matt Lilligren

What: County officials will discuss the housing crisis emergency, the creation of an emergency housing location on county grounds and address concerns about potential adverse impacts.

Where: The webinar will be broadcast in English on the County of Sonoma Facebook page. A live Spanish interpretation will be available on the County of Sonoma YouTube channel. The details of the Zoom meetings are as follows:

  • Friday, 24, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., via Zoom. (See registration link below.) The discussion will focus on the consideration of a site on the County Campus, possibly at the parking lot at Permit Sonoma at 2550 Ventura Ave.
  • Monday, Feb 27, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., also on Zoom. The discussion will be on the consideration of the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building as an emergency housing site.

The virtual meetings will be streamed live on the County of Sonoma Facebook page with live translation in Spanish on the County of Sonoma YouTube channel. Questions may be submitted in advance to publicaffairs@sonoma-county.org. The public will also be invited to ask questions during the webinar by using the Q&A box on Zoom or by posting them in the Facebook comment section.
