Board of Supervisors approves public art installation at Joe Rodota Trail entrance in Sebastopol

SANTA ROSA, CA | October 08, 2024

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors today approved a new public art installation at the entrance of the Joe Rodota Trail in Sebastopol, highlighting the County's ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces and promoting cultural awareness.

In partnership with the City of Sebastopol, the County has entered into a 25-year agreement to install and maintain the $25,000 artwork at a site along Highway 116, just south of the USPS Annex at 275 Petaluma Ave. The installation, on land owned by Sonoma County Regional Parks, will serve as a welcoming landmark into Sebastopol’s downtown for residents and visitors using the popular Joe Rodota Trail.

Bruce Johnson sculpture Koan“North Coast artist Bruce Johnson created bold, distinctly West County works of art, emphasizing salvaged old growth redwood and metal, intertwining nature with industry,” said Supervisor Lynda Hopkins. “The community suffered a great loss when he passed away last year. I’m grateful to Bruce’s family for sharing Koan so that the public will be able to enjoy his art for many years to come. This art installation will become a special part of the trail's entrance, and I want to thank the city for its leadership in making this project a reality.”

In early 2024, the City of Sebastopol issued a call for artists across California to submit designs for the project, emphasizing the need for an original, low-maintenance and durable art suitable for long-term outdoor display. After a careful review process, several designs were exhibited for public feedback at the Sebastopol Regional Library.

The original selected piece, Koan, by the late, local sculptor Bruce Johnson, is a striking sculpture made from reclaimed old-growth redwood, salvaged from Northern California’s coast. Known for his profound work with natural materials, Johnson’s sculpture invites viewers to reflect on themes of renewal and harmony. Koan will become a permanent feature of the Joe Rodota Trail, continuing Johnson’s tradition of creating art that resonates with environmental and social consciousness.
