Flooding Likely in Low-Lying Areas of Jenner

Jenner,CA | December 17, 2018

Flooding is likely in low-lying areas near Jenner tonight and into Monday, due to waters rapidly rising in the Russian River estuary (where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean). Water surface elevations in the estuary are currently approximately 10 feet above sea level. Flooding of docks, boat houses and the Jenner Visitor Center generally occur when water surface elevations reach nine feet.

The mouth of the Russian River estuary closed on Friday, December 14, when a barrier beach was created as a result of large ocean swells. Water levels have risen quickly (more than 1 foot in five hours today), aided by wave overwash from the large surf and high river flows from heavy rainfall.

While tonight’s outgoing tide may result in the barrier beach opening, the lower tide could be offset by predicted large waves. When the river mouth closes, the Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) is responsible for managing the estuary to reduce the risks of flooding. Sonoma Water staff has been actively monitoring conditions since Friday, but large waves have made it unsafe to bring heavy equipment onto the beach. Staff is looking for opportunities that might allow for artificial breaching, and is providing updates to area residents and emergency services.
