Residential HVAC
System Design Basics and Performance Testing
Morning Session: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Instructor Russ King will
introduce Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system design basics
and best practices, common problems with HVAC system design and HERS diagnostic
testing to ensure high quality installation and that installed systems operate
as designed. Russ will describe diagnostic testing equipment and procedures used
for verifying: duct leakage, static pressure, air flow, fan watt draw,
refrigerant charge, equipment sizing and air balancing.
Residential
Envelope Improvement and Performance Testing
Afternoon Session: 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Instructor Russ King will
describe HERS Quality Insulation Installation basics and requirements for new
construction and additions, and best practices for alterations air sealing,
including ducts, attic venting and radiant barriers. Russ will introduce HERS building envelope
diagnostic testing equipment and procedures using a blower door and IR camera.
Instructor:
Russ King is a professional
mechanical engineer and Senior Director of Technical Services at
CalCERTS. He is a licensed mechanical engineer with 30 years of
experience in HVAC design, energy codes, energy ratings, building science, and
training. He is the author of the book Introduction to Residential HVAC Systems
– HVAC 1.0. He is one of very few licensed mechanical engineers that specialize
in HVAC and energy design in residential buildings.
Tools from County of Sonoma Energy and Sustainability Division Tool Lending Library used for these measurements will be available for participants to explore.
