Sonoma Water to Host Meeting to Discuss Improvements to Central Sonoma Watershed Project

March 29, 2022

Sonoma Water and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will hold a virtual scoping meeting to discuss the new watershed Plan for the Central Sonoma Watershed Project on Wednesday April 6 at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of the Watershed Plan is twofold:

  • Identify and evaluate alternatives that restore or improve flood protection in the City of Santa Rosa and surrounding communities.
  • Mitigate vulnerabilities to increase community resilience over the next 50 years.

The Central Sonoma Watershed Project (CSWP) provides flood protection for the City of Santa Rosa and surrounding communities. The CSWP was designed in 1958 and includes four reservoirs (Brush Creek Reservoir, Piner Reservoir, Matanzas Creek Reservoir and Spring Lake), two diversion structures and approximately 21 miles of channel improvements in the Santa Rosa Creek watershed. Given the age of CSWP facilities, development and land-use changes that have occurred over the last 60 years and newly available seismic risk and climate data, Sonoma Water and the NRCS are proposing a new Watershed Plan.

“The purpose of the scoping meeting is to describe the project to the general public, solicit input and let the public know how to provide comments they would like to have considered,” said Sonoma County Supervisor and Sonoma Water Board member Susan Gorin. In addition to the scoping meeting, there is a 30-day scoping period when the public may provide input, comments, and information for the planning process. Comments and information received during the 30-day scoping period will be considered when identifying and evaluating feasible alternatives in the Draft Watershed Plan. “It’s a great opportunity for Sonoma County residents to provide feedback regarding the Watershed Plan, which will strengthen Santa Rosa’s flood resiliency for the next 50 years,” Gorin added.

The public is invited to attend, discuss and comment during the following virtual Watershed Plan scoping meeting:
