SANTA ROSA, CA | August 07, 2023

Jeff DuVall, an emergency services manager with more than 15 years of leadership experience in emergency management, community engagement and homeland security, has been named director of the County of Sonoma’s Department of Emergency Management.

As director, DuVall will lead emergency preparedness and response operations for the county government, the largest employer in Sonoma County with approximately 4,200 full-time workers. DuVall, who has served as interim director of the department since March and as Deputy Director since 2019, was named to the position by County Administrator Christina Rivera following a nationwide recruitment. The appointment is scheduled to be approved by the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 15.

“Jeff brings tremendous knowledge and lived experience to the role,” said Chris Coursey, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “We are in good hands with him at the helm, and I’m confident the good work of the department will continue.”

The Department of Emergency Management, which has 15 employees and an operating budget of $7.9 million, manages the County Emergency Operations Center personnel, activations, training and exercises; the county-wide Operational Area emergency management program; and the Emergency Notification System.

“Through our numerous emergencies, Jeff has remained a steadfast and collaborative partner for the entire Operational Area,” said Rivera.

DuVall began his emergency response career as a fire dispatcher for the City of Anaheim. He grew his experience to a wide array of skills including 9-1-1 dispatch and a variety of roles in emergency and trauma technician work. Prior to coming to Sonoma County, DuVall was the emergency manager for the City of Anaheim.

“Sonoma County has made tremendous strides in the field of emergency management, and I’m looking forward to expanding our positive impacts within the community,” Duvall said.

His salary as director will be set at $185,461 annually. His new role will become effective on Aug. 15.
