County of Sonoma highlights 2024 public infrastructure upgrades and improvements
SANTA ROSA, CA | January 09, 2025
Sonoma County today announced the results of public investment in roads in unincorporated areas and other critical infrastructure for 2024, including the resurfacing of more than 38 miles of county-maintained roads, the installation of 53 culverts and repair of more than 1,266 potholes. Sonoma County uses a combination of corrective maintenance and pavement preservation to take care of 1,368 miles of roads and 328 bridges, which is the largest road network in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“The Board of Supervisors proactively contributes more discretionary dollars to road repairs than any other California county, including more than $12 million annually,” said District 2 Supervisor David Rabbitt, who served as board chair for 2024. “Each season, through disasters and emergencies, we build on gains made the year before. The return on investment is resilient infrastructure that improves service to residents and visitors and protects against increasingly extreme weather events.”
The cost of all public infrastructure improvement projects in 2024 is approximately $75 million and is funded by a combination of County General Funds from the Board of Supervisors, PG&E settlement funds, federal Highway Bridge Program funds, Sonoma County Transportation Authority funds and disaster reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Other funding sources for county road repairs include the Measure L transient occupancy tax and Measure M sales tax. Because state gas tax funding for roads is distributed based on the number of vehicle registrations in a county rather than the number of road miles, rural counties receive disproportionately less road funding.
