Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport set to perform storm culvert and runway upgrades on June 24

SANTA ROSA, CA | June 20, 2024

The Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport will refurbish a section of runway pavement and replace a deteriorating culvert on Monday, June 24. The work will be completed over 20 hours including nighttime work and is expected to cost $667,115. The permanent repair project is being coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, which has oversight of safety and operations at the regional airfield, to mitigate any possible impacts to the traveling public.

“I applaud County airport officials for being proactive in addressing these concerns,” said Supervisor David Rabbitt, chair of the Board of Supervisors. “There is nothing more important than the safety of the traveling public and our employees. Thanks to a coordinated response with the FAA, the quality and reliability of our airport infrastructure remains first-rate.”

Airport officials prepared and submitted a sound repair plan to the FAA following an annual inspection which identified the need for repairs. The FAA conducts annual audits at all active airports with airline service in the United States to ensure compliance with federal safety regulations.

Following the annual report, airport officials took immediate and proactive measures to address the aging culvert and runway impacts, including an emergency repair to address minimal ground settlement caused by the 84-year-old culvert, where approximately eight percent of the drainage pipe is partially compromised. Airport operations and engineers have been monitoring the concerns daily and installed a 24-hour jobsite camera to observe the temporary fix until permanent repairs are completed.
