Above Ground and Under Ground Storage Tank Management (AST/UST)

Above Ground Fuel Storage Tanks

AST and UST regulations are complex and based on the intended use. Tanks may be used for the storage of hazardous, gasoline, or non-hazardous, water, materials and regulations will vary based on usage and volume.  Tanks are used for bulk storage of goods: gas, liquid or solid and are also referred to as “bulk storage containers.” OSHA regulations apply to those working around tanks, but there are other regulations that direct how these tanks are managed. Depending on the size and function of tanks, other local, state, or federal regulations may also apply. These regulations can include piping, confined spaces, fire protection, fall protection, and spill control.

This program applies to stationery tanks. Tanks used for transportation of goods are regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The program is managed and enforced through the local CUPA and is part of the HMBP.

To get more information on the applicability of above or underground storage tank management for a specific County operation please contact the corresponding departmental Safety Coordinator.
