Sonoma County Assessment Roll increases to more than $114 billion

Sonoma County’s net assessment roll has hit an all-time high of $114,485,345,311, which represents an increase of 5.68 percent over last year’s assessment. The roll amount, which Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor Deva Marie Proto delivered to the Sonoma County Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office last week, reflects the value of all real and business property in Sonoma County as of Jan. 1, 2023.

Property tax revenue generated by the assessment roll funds vital institutions, such as public K-12 schools, community colleges, counties, cities, as well as public benefits and services. Approximately 50 percent of local property tax revenue goes toward public education.

The 5.68 percent increase to the assessment roll can be attributed to Sonoma County’s strong residential market combined with the 2 percent increase to the Consumer Price Index. 

Property owners who feel their assessed value is higher than the market value as of Jan. 1, 2023 are encouraged to file an Application of Change Assessment with the Clerk of the Board by Nov. 30, 2023.

The Assessor’s Office has been continuing to work through a backlog of work resulting from multiple disasters, a strong real estate market over the last several years, the implementation of Proposition 19 and staffing turnover. The Board of Supervisors in the last year has approved additional positions, which will assist in addressing the backlog, and ensure that the Assessor’s Office is providing timely property assessments to Sonoma County property owners.
