Municipal Composting

Transportation and Public Works is now Sonoma Public Infrastructure - Website updates coming soon!

Sonoma Compost Now Closed

Sonoma Compost Company closed on October 1, 2015. The yard debris, vegetative food waste, and recyclable wood collected from County Refuse Disposal sites and from weekly pickup of residential curbside green waste now gets transferred from the Central Disposal Site and other transfer stations to composting facilities located outside Sonoma County.

Compost and recyclable wood can still be disposed of at most Sonoma County Refuse Disposal Sites, but until further notice, retail sales of municipal compost and recycled wood is no longer available. Note: The Central Disposal Site on Mecham Road in Petaluma does not accept Compost, wood or wood pallets at this time.

Recyclable yard debris and veggie scraps can be dropped off at most of the County Disposal Sites for a significantly lower cost than disposing of garbage. Note: The Central Disposal Site on Mecham Road in Petaluma does not accept Compost, wood or wood pallets at this time.

For disposal locations and hours of operation, please see Disposal Sites.
