New trails, more coming to Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve

Sonoma County’s largest trail construction project in over a decade is underway at Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve in Santa Rosa. When completed, hikers, cyclists and equestrians will have access to an additional 450 acres of the 1,100-acre park. These new trails will improve the quality of recreational opportunities and access to nature close to Sonoma County’s most populous city, adding approximately 8 miles of new multi-use trails and doubling the park’s existing trail network. County of Sonoma awarded up to $10 million by USDA for multi-agency climate project

The Natural Resources Conservation Service, within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, announced its selection of the County of Sonoma for a tentative award through the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities funding opportunity. The project, titled Sonoma Marin Ag and County Climate Coalition, represents a large partnership effort across multiple organizations from both Sonoma and Marin counties, with the County of Sonoma acting as the lead entity. MAN SENTENCED TO SERVE 20 YEARS IN PRISON FOR BRUTAL 2020 KNIFE ATTACK

Defendant Justin Takacs, 39 years old of Santa Rosa, was sentenced earlier today by the Honorable Christopher Honigsberg to serve 20 years in state prison after being found guilty by a jury in June of this year to charges of mayhem after causing the violent disfigurement of his housemate back in 2020. Board of Supervisors approves $360,000 contract for wildfire structural hardening assessments

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted today to approve a $361,034 contract with Wildfire Defense Works to provide structural hardening assessments in pre-identified project locations throughout the county. Wildfire Defense Works will perform between 250 to 1,000 structural hardening assessments for Permit Sonoma’s Wildfire Adapted program. The contract is a portion of the $2.6 million in grant funding received by the county as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Read full story

Planning Commission to hold hearing on draft Environmental Impact Report for Sonoma Developmental Center

The Sonoma County Planning Commission will hold a hearing and seek public feedback on the draft Environmental Impact Report and draft specific plan for the Sonoma Developmental Center on Sept. 15, 2022 at 1 p.m. The draft Environmental Impact Report evaluated a proposed specific plan for the Sonoma Developmental Center site, two lower density alternatives, and two scenarios where the county doesn’t proceed with a project in 16 key areas of the property. Sonoma County’s Board of Supervisors today approved the Climate Resilient Lands Strategy, a document designed to provide structure and guidance to climate-related efforts throughout the county, with a focus on natural and working lands. The strategy was produced by the Climate Action and Resiliency Division within the County Administrator’s Office and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District.
