Sonoma County campus to be illuminated green in support of National Veterans Awareness Week

SANTA ROSA, CA | November 02, 2022

To honor veterans across the nation, the Sonoma County Administration Center and several other government buildings will be illuminated with green lights from Nov. 7 to Nov. 13 as part of Operation Green Light, a public awareness campaign in observation of National Veterans Awareness Week.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors officially recognized the initiative by adopting a resolution during its regular meeting today, in addition to a Gold Resolution marking Nov. 11 as Veterans Day in Sonoma County, a federal holiday to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

“Sonoma County is grateful to our local veterans and their families, who have made immense sacrifices and endured significant stress for our safety and security,” said James Gore, chair of the Board of Supervisors. “Operation Green Light is a symbolic action that signals to veterans that Sonoma County sees you, that your contributions matter, and we will continue working at every level to ensure access to the support you need.”

As part of Operation Green Light, the Sonoma County Department of Public Infrastructure, in coordination with the Sonoma County Veterans Service Office, will be illuminating multiple buildings throughout the county including the Administration Building in Santa Rosa as well as Veterans Memorial Buildings in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sonoma, Cotati and the Guerneville Plaza.

Operation Green Light for Veterans was launched by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers to show support for veterans of military conflicts, as well as to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and their families, and the resources available to assist former service members.

The new national collaborative builds on successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the New York State County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021. Sonoma County residents are also encouraged to participate by changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb.
