Hire a Caregiver

Your paid, IHSS care provider can be someone in your family, a friend, a professional from an agency or someone you choose from the IHSS PA Registry of pre-screened caregivers.

If you want to hire someone you know for in-home care, we enroll them in the program so they are paid as your employee.

If you are looking for a care provider, we can give you a list of referrals from our Registry, a database of pre-screened caregivers. Registry referrals includes information about their caregiving skills and schedule of times they're available to work.

Our goal is offer you referrals to caregivers who can provide quality in-home care to suit your needs and schedule. To support lasting client-caregiver relationships, we meet personally interview care providers about their background and skills when they attend our orientation program. We check references, do a criminal background check and make sure each caregiver has valid identification and documents (Social Security card, photo ID, driver’s license if driving).

Please see the IHSS PA Consumer Handbook (new edition coming soon), which details your responsibilities as the employer of an IHSS care provider. It also outlines how to hire a caregiver, supervise care providers and how to request a short-term Urgent Substitute in an emergency (scroll to bottom of page).
