Sonoma County Housing Authority awarded $1.18 million in funding for new housing vouchers

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the Sonoma County Housing Authority more than $1.18 million in additional Family Unification Program (FUP) vouchers. The 53 new vouchers are in addition to the existing, fully-utilized, 117 vouchers that are provided through the HUD-sponsored FUP, which supports families and youths to find permanent stable housing. Roseland development project to enter demolition phase; groundbreaking expected in 2024

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors today authorized the county’s Community Development Commission to execute contracts to begin demolition to make way for the long-awaited Roseland Development Project, Tierra De Rosas. The demolition phase will include the installation of infrastructure for the Tierra De Rosas project and will play a critical role in the Casa Roseland Project, the affordable housing portion of the project. Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approves temporary moratorium on mobile home park rent increases

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a temporary moratorium on rent increases in mobile home parks in unincorporated areas. The urgency ordinance took effect immediately and will remain in place until the board amends the existing regulations or until Feb. 29, 2024, whichever occurs first. The moratorium does not apply to mobile home parks within the county’s nine cities. Read full story

County of Sonoma to host Town Hall meeting regarding Elderberry Commons transition plan

The County of Sonoma will be hosting a town hall meeting on Monday, May 1 at 6 p.m. to respond to community questions about the transition plan for the Elderberry Commons, formerly known as the Sebastopol Inn. The public will be invited to ask questions during the Zoom-based forum, which will be streamed live on the county’s Facebook page and on YouTube in Spanish. Read full story

Michelle Whitman selected as executive director of Sonoma County Community Development Commission

Michelle Whitman, executive director for the Renewal Enterprise District since 2019, has been selected to lead the Sonoma County Community Development Commission. The appointment by County Administrator Maria Christina Rivera is scheduled to be approved by the Board of Supervisors on April 18. Read full story

County releases detailed 2022 homeless point-in-time count, updates camping ordinance

The Board of Supervisors today received a presentation detailing the complete Homeless Point-in-Time Count report for 2022. A total of 2,893 homeless individuals were counted during the one-day census taken on Feb. 25, 2022, an increase of about 5 percent from the 2,745 individuals counted in 2020. Overall, however, the number represents a significant decline in numbers for the county over the past decade. Read full story

Sonoma County Project Homekey site approved

George’s Hideaway located along Highway 116 in Guerneville has been approved to become Sonoma County’s latest supportive housing site under a list of approved Project Homekey sites released today by the state Department of Housing & Community Development. The former tavern and restaurant will be the sixth overall county location funded through Project Homekey, a state initiative to convert vacant or underused buildings into housing for homeless individuals or those at risk of homelessness.
