COVID-19 Health Alert for Grand Princess Cruise Passengers
Published: March 04, 2020
The first presumptive positive case of COVID-19 in a Sonoma County resident was diagnosed in an individual who had recently returned from a “Mexican Riviera” cruise on the Grand Princess (Princess Cruises) from February 11-21, 2020 out of San Francisco with several stops in Mexico before returning to San Francisco. There is another case of COVID-19 in a resident of another county linked to this particular cruise. Both patients presented with somewhat atypical symptoms, included gastrointestinal and cardiovascular symptoms.
These findings emphasize the importance of obtaining a thorough travel history and the potential to identify new exposure sources and locations. It also highlights that the congregate environment on cruise ships can promote prolonged close contact believed to increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission if someone on the ship is infected.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is notifying passengers who were on this cruise that they may have been exposed. If you have patients that call you stating they were passengers, please screen them for symptoms and call our Disease Control Unit at (707) 565-4567 to discuss and coordinate testing.
