Sonoma County Voting

Overview

As required by federal law, Sonoma County provides all essential voting materials in Spanish. In addition, as mandated by state law, Sonoma County provides facsimile ballots in Khmer, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

Federal Language Requirements

In December of 2021, Sonoma County was officially notified by the U.S. Department of Justice that it had been designated a bilingual county for purposes of elections by the U.S. Census Bureau. This means that moving forward, all official ballots, voter information guides, and other voter communications will be required to be in both English and Spanish.

According to the language provisions of Section 203 of the Federal Voting Rights Act, 52 U.S.C. § 10503, bilingual designations are updated every five years based on the latest census data. Specifically, a political jurisdiction will qualify as bilingual if the following two conditions are met:

  • More than five percent of voting-age citizens are members of a single language minority group and do not ‘‘speak or understand English adequately enough to participate in the electoral process’’
  • The rate of voting-age citizens who have not completed fifth grade or higher is greater than than the national rate of voting-age citizens who have not completed the fifth grade.

California law requires elections officials to provide translated copies of official ballots (called “facsimile ballots”) to voters in certain precincts where a minimum number of voters who speak languages other than English reside. A facsimile ballot is NOT an official Ballot; it is used to assist voters in marking their choices. DO NOT vote the facsimile ballot. Vote and return only your official ballot.

  • If you vote in person, a facsimile ballot in the required languages will be at each Vote Center. 
  • If you vote by mail, you may request a facsimile ballot be sent to you in one of the languages required for Sonoma County. To request a Facsimile Ballot in Spanish, Tagalog, Khmer, or Vietnamese:

Requests must be received no later than 7 days before Election Day. Telephone interpreter services for most languages will be available at all Vote Centers. You may bring up to 2 people to assist you at the Vote Center, however they cannot be your employer or union representative.

Requisitos de Idioma del Estado

La ley del estado de California requiere que los funcionarios electorales proporcionen copias traducidas de las boletas electorales oficiales (llamadas "copias de la boleta electoral") a los votantes en ciertos recintos electorales donde reside un número mínimo de votantes que hablan otros idiomas diferentes al inglés. Una copia de la boleta electoral NO es una boleta electoral oficial; se utiliza para ayudar a los electores a marcar su decisión. NO vote en la copia de la boleta electoral. Vote y entregue solo su boleta electoral oficial.

  • Si vota en persona, encontrará en el Centro de Votación una copia de la boleta electoral en todos los idiomas requeridos.
  • Si vota por correo, puede solicitar que se le envíe una copia de la boleta electoral en uno de los idiomas requeridos por el condado de Sonoma.  Para solicitar una copia de la boleta electoral:

Las solicitudes deben recibirse antes de los 7 días previos al día de las elecciones.  Los servicios de interpretación telefónica para la mayoría de los idiomas estarán disponibles en todos los Centros de Votación. Puede llevar hasta 2 personas para ayudarle en el Centro de Votación; sin embargo, no pueden ser su empleador o su representante sindical.

Mga Kinakailangan sa Wika ng Estado

Ang batas ng California ay nag-aatas sa mga opisyal ng halalan na magkaloob ng mga isinaling kopya ng Mga Opisyal na Balota (tinatawag na “Mga Pagksimileng Balota”) sa mga botante sa mga partikular na presinto kung saan naninirahan ang isang pinakamababang bilang ng mga botante na nagsasalita ng mga wikang iba sa Ingles. Ang mga kahilingan ay dapat matanggap nang hindi lalampas sa 7 araw bago ang Araw ng Halalan.  Magiging available ang mga serbisyo ng interpreter sa telepono para sa karamihan ng mga wika sa lahat ng Sentro ng Pagboto. Puwede kang magsama ng hanggang 2 tao para tulungan ka sa Sentro ng Pagboto, gayunpaman, hindi puwedeng sila ang employer o union representative mo.

  • Nếu quý vị bỏ phiếu tại một nơi bỏ phiếu, sẽ có Bản Sao Lá Phiếu bằng ngôn ngữ theo yêu cầu tại nơi bỏ phiếu 
  • Nếu quý vị bỏ phiếu qua thư, quý vị có thể yêu cầu được gửi đến Bản Sao Lá Phiếu bằng một trong những ngôn ngữ theo yêu cầu cho Quận Sonoma.. Để yêu cầu một Bản Sao Lá Phiếu bằng tiếng Tây Ban Nha, Tagalog, Khmer hay tiếng Việt:

Yêu cầu phải được tiếp nhận không trễ hơn 7 ngày trước Ngày Bầu Cử.  Dịch vụ thông dịch qua điện thoại cho hầu hết các ngôn ngữ sẽ được cung cấp tại tất cả các Trung Tâm Bỏ Phiếu. Quý vị có thể đi cùng tối đa 2 người để họ hỗ trợ quý vị tại Trung Tâm Bỏ Phiếu nhưng họ không được là chủ sử dụng lao động hoặc đại diện công đoàn của quý vị.
