We will be constructing ADA related improvements at various locations along Bohemian Highway and throughout Occidental beginning later this summer and continuing over the winter into spring 2018. The project is expected to start in September, and will require seven months or more to complete depending on weather.
The ADA construction project will bring sidewalks, curb ramps, parking stalls, crosswalks and other paved areas into compliance with ADA standards and provide safer access for all users on both sides of Bohemian Highway within the commercial downtown area.
Typically, Transportation and Public Works makes ADA improvements when we are modifying an adjacent facility, like a road that is connected to a pedestrian ramp. This approach allows for strategically planned and comprehensive improvements. You may notice that the upcoming work in Occidental has a different approach because it is a result of a legal settlement – there will be isolated improvements dictated by the settlement agreement.
Every effort will be made by the County and the Contractor performing the work to maintain access to residences and businesses at all times during the construction period. However, there will be traffic, parking and pedestrian impacts in localized areas where work is occurring, including temporary loss of parking and occasional detours for vehicular traffic and pedestrians during business hours (7 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday) adjacent to active work zones throughout the project duration.
