Landscaping of Highway 101 at Airport Boulevard Interchange

Project Status: Complete

Project # G14001

Status: Complete

This Measure M -funded project is located on Highway 101 at Airport Boulevard in Sonoma County between the cities of Santa Rosa and Windsor near the Sonoma County Airport. The project proposes to construct landscape improvements through an encroachment permit issued by Caltrans as a follow up to the Highway 101 North/Airport Boulevard interchange and sound walls project.

Project Information

Plant visual replacement trees within Airport Blvd interchange ramp areas and plant streetscape trees along Airport Blvd.  This is a follow-up project to the interchange construction improvements recently completed at Airport Blvd and Hwy 101.

Ramp areas will be planted with redwoods and drought tolerant tree species such as oaks and crape myrtles.  Olive trees will be planted along Airport Blvd.  Due to state-wide drought restrictions, only recycled water can be used for irrigation.  A temporary irrigation system using recycled water will be installed for a three to five year period of time to establish and sustain the trees initially.  Trees are expected to thrive on natural rainfall following removal of the temporary irrigation system.  Landscape ground cover and bushes will not be planted due to high water use during plant establishment.  Landscape design is required to meet Caltrans landscape guidelines.

Project is funded through Measure M.

In 2013 and 2014 upgrades were made to the Highway 101 and Airport Boulevard interchange, and the Fulton Road overpass. To accommodate construction some of the trees at the Airport Blvd. interchange were removed. The construction created new space for planting native trees or ground-cover at the Airport Blvd. on and off ramps, and along the sidewalks of Airport Blvd.
