Hauser Bridge Replacement Project

Project # C11006

Status: Complete

We are currently replacing the one-lane bridge over the South Fork of the Gualala River with a two lane, 29 foot wide and 165 foot long steel bridge.

The new bridge will be adjacent to the existing bridge, and will provide two lanes designed to meet current standards, including shoulders and improvements to the approaching roadway. The existing bridge will remain in place through the construction process.

Built in 1947, the existing bridge consists of a one-lane steel truss structure with a steel grid style deck. The bridge suffers from corrosion and foundation issues, causing it to become structurally deficient.

Construction Updates and Traffic Impacts

Throughout construction there will be heavy equipment using the road and bridge, and we ask all drivers and cyclists to use the area slowly and with caution.

The existing bridge will remain in place through the construction process to minimize traffic impacts, and aid in construction of the new bridge.

Scheduled Detours

During the month of October, there will be a few days when through traffic, both vehicles and bicyclists, will be asked to detour at the intersections of Tin Barn Road and King Ridge Road, and at Kruse Ranch Road and Seaview Road, from 7 am through 8 pm.

Additional signage will be posted at the intersections of Timber Cove and Seaview Road recommending travelers use Timber Cove Road to Highway 1, and at Stewarts Point Road and Tin Barn Road recommending travelers use Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs Road to Highway 1.

On Saturday, October 9th, concrete is scheduled to be poured on site. No detour is planned, although there will be heavy trucks on the road.

    Conceptual Construction Video

This video demonstrates the construction concepts for replacing Hauser Bridge.

The existing Hauser Bridge carries Hauser Bridge Road over the South Fork of the Gualala River about 4 miles east of the junction of Highway 1 and Kruse Ranch Road, near Cazadero.

Transportation and Public Works is managing fifteen bridge projects in various phases, including the construction of Hauser Bridge.  The project is 100% federally funded, with an 88.53% through the Highway Bridge Program and an 11.47% local match requirement, which can be met with toll credits. Limited environmental constraints and minimal public impact have helped to accelerate the schedule of this project.

Construction began in April 2017, and we expect to complete the work this year.

Granite Construction is the contractor constructing the bridge, while Caltrop is providing Construction Management to control the project's time, cost and quality. For more information or questions, please call Transportation and Public Work’s construction hotline at (707) 565-2533.
