Announcement of Public Workshops on Community Separators

Santa Rosa, CA  –  March 18, 2016  –  Community Separators are lands that function to separate cities and unincorporated communities, contain urban development, and preserve distinct community identities by providing visual relief from continuous urbanization. The public is encouraged to attend to learn and provide input about expansion of the existing Community Separators and the proposed ballot measure.

The current efforts of PRMD, as directed by the Board of Supervisors, include a public process to gather community input, the preparation of a November 2016 ballot measure to extend the life of the existing Community Separators, and consideration of potential expansion of the separators. Input gathered from this public workshop will be used to prepare the ballot measure.

Community Separators were originally designated in the 1989 Sonoma County General Plan and call for maintaining low densities and intensities of development within Community Separators, preservation of important open space areas, retention of specimen trees and tree stands, avoidance of the extension of public sewer and water services, and preserving rural character through a specific set of design guidelines.

Information may be found at the project website: or by emailing County staff at or calling (707) 565-1352.
