Gates are a great security feature to any residential and commercial property. Designed to slow or stop people and vehicles people from entering the property without permission. They also do a great job in slowing fire personal from arriving on the property in a timely matter. Whether being called for a medical aid or a fire, seconds count. Sonoma County Fire Safety Ordinance requires all existing and newly installed gates to be permitted and or to comply with fire access requirements. This includes width, distance and method of opening. Providing approved fire department access will save time and prevent unnecessary damage to fire apparatus and the property owners expensive security feature.
Residential and Commercial Gates
Per Fire Safe Standards Sec 13-38, gate entrances shall be at least two feet (2') wider than the width of the traffic lane(s) serving the gate.
All gates providing access from a road to a driveway shall be located at least thirty feet (30') from the roadway and shall open to allow a vehicle to stop without obstructing traffic on the roadway.
Where a gated entrance is locked, a Knox Box or other emergency release device approved by the county fire chief shall be provided for emergency access. Approved Devices
Per California Fire Code Chapter 5, Section 506 and Fire Safe Standards Section 13-38 (c) any gate which is existing and does not have the approved Knox Device will be required at any time to provide the approved device at the discretion of the Fire Code Official.
