The goal of Upstream Investments is to stop social problems before they start.
An initiative of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, Upstream Investments helps
social welfare and service agencies create and employ programs that prevent community problems by building equal opportunity for educational accomplishment, positive physical and mental health and economic wellness for all residents.
With staff located within the County Department of Human Services, Upstream trains and coaches local non-profits to research, employ
and evaluate quality, evidence-based prevention strategies they can use to fulfill their missions and promote social good. When organizations use prevention strategies that address community problems before they start, short- and long-term financial and social costs are reduced.
Organizations trained by Upstream staff are eligible to be listed on the Portfolio of Model Upstream Programs. The Portfolio is a collection of programs that have been reviewed for effectiveness in preventing and reducing social problems. Ongoing evaluation of local Portfolio programs ensures that they are effective in Sonoma County.
