A 21-member Advisory Council to the Area Agency on Aging makes recommendations to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors regarding issues and concerns affecting older adults 60+, adults with disabilities and their caregivers. The Board of Supervisors appoints 10 community members and the standing Advisory Council elects 11 others to represent the county’s geographic areas and special population groups.
The responsibilities of the Advisory Council include planning, funding, advocacy, program development, and coordination of services for older adults and adults with disabilities. The programming and direction of the Council are represented in the Area Plan on Aging Report (PDF)that is presented to the Board of Supervisors and released every four years. Current concerns described in the Plan include: ease of access to services, access to transportation, affordable housing, accessible health care, caregiver support, elder abuse prevention and services for special populations, such as LGBTQI+ older adults.
The Advisory Council meets the third Wednesday of every month. Advisory Council Committees include Planning & Funding, Civic Engagement, Housing and Transportation & Mobility. Meetings are open and members of the public are welcome and invited to participate.
