Indoor-Outdoor Homeless Shelters

The Board of Supervisors approved actions to identify more medium- to long-term indoor/outdoor homeless shelters and navigation centers.

In December of 2019 the Board of Supervisors invested $12 million dollars to develop additional housing and sheltering options, mental health and substance use services. That includes establishing two pilot indoor/outdoor shelters.

Narrowing Site Options

On March 10, 2020 the Board will review six locations for two pilot shelter sites, and select two or three sites for further evaluation. After March 10th, the County will continue to share information and answer questions regarding the two or three sites. The Board will make a final decision on the sites on April 7, 2020.

Two or three of the following sites will be selected for further consideration on March 10, 2020

  • Aston area of the Fairgrounds
  • Cloverdale Rail Depot, 501 Asti Road
  • Permit Sonoma Parking Lot
  • Chanate Lab Parking Lot, 3313 Chanate
  • Lot at 4040 Santa Rosa Avenue
  • Chanate Hall, 3333 Chanate

The shelters may include a combination of on-site structures, RV hook-ups, and safe parking. These shelters are an entry point into Sonoma County’s housing network, not an end point, so the shelters will have a navigation center to help connect people to permanent supportive housing.

We’re committed to helping shelters be a good neighbor to residents and businesses, and every shelter will need individual operating procedures and practices to ensure the best fit for the surrounding neighborhood. After March 10, 2020 we’ll reach out to neighborhoods to provide additional information and answer questions. View the agenda
