Office of Vital Statistics

The Office of Vital Statistics provides the following services:

  • Registers Sonoma County births and deaths
  • Provides birth certificates for this year and last year only
  • Provides death certificates for this year and last year only
  • Issues permits for disposition of human remains
  • Provides data for reporting of communicable diseases (Confidential Morbidity Reporting) to the State of California
  • Processes applications for California Medical Marijuana ID Card (MMIC) Program

Birth and death certificates for all years, including current years, are available from the Sonoma County Clerk's Office: (707) 565-2645.

The Office of Vital Statistics will expand services by appointment only effective May 24, 2021

Mail Order Services:

While the Vital Statistics office was temporarily closed to comply with the COVID-19 shelter in place order, we provided essential services, including the registration of birth and death records.  We will continue to provide mail order service.  Please review the links below if you wish to order by mail.

  • Birth Certificate (2020 and 2021) *
  • Death Certificates (2020 and 2021) *
  • Register Home Births – in person appointment required
  • Medical Marijuana ID Card – in person appointment required

*The Vital Statistics Office only provides Birth and Death Certificates from 2020 and 2021.  For records from previous years, please contact the Sonoma County Clerk-Recorders office at 565-3800, 585 Fiscal Drive, Room 103, Santa Rosa, CA 95403
