WD-FOS1 Foundations of Supervision I

This course is designed for new supervisors or supervisors who have served in a supervisory role for less than one year within a County department or special agency. Topics covered will include a discussion on the "Supervisor's Safety Toolkit" and resources available to supervisors to assist in effective implementation of the Sonoma County Safety Management Program, as well as:

  • The differences between individual contributors and supervisors and how to transition into your new role
  • A beginning supervisory skills self-assessment
  • How to earn respect and authority from those you manage through your actions, as opposed to your title
  • Understanding behavioral style differences
  • Effective two-way communication with others
    • Listening
    • Building a positive climate through your words, tone, and nonverbal communication
    • Giving/receiving feedback from others
  • Managing conflict
  • Planning projects and activities
  • Problem solving and decision-making
  • Using your time effectively
  • Conducting effective meetings
  • Assigning and distributing work assignments to others through effective delegation
  • Training and coaching staff members
  • Evaluating and documenting staff performance
  • Managing performance improvement
  • Hiring new employees
  • The importance of finding a mentor to help you improve your skills
  •  Action planning to improve supervisory skills
