As the name implies, Shelter-in-Place is a directive to remain at one’s current location and take cover due to an impending or in-progress hazardous event. A Shelter-in-Place can be issued for any number of events and can affect a business, a building, or a community. An example can be the release of hazardous gases or fumes from a manufacturing facility. Another example could be an incident involving a dangerous person or situation.
The authorities use several methods to notify individuals and businesses of a Shelter-in-Place requirement. Notices can be given using a distinctive audible alarm, verbally through the telephone network, the media, or in person, or electronically using email, text, or the internet.
Shelter-in-Place is also part of the Emergency Action Plan standards. However, it is distinct from moving to a shelter as a refuge from flooding or other disasters.
