New Employee? Understanding Health Benefits

As a new Full or Part time employee at the County of Sonoma, you probably have a lot of questions about your health benefits; 

  • When will I begin receiving my benefits?
  • What benefits am I eligible for?
  • What is my share of cost?
  • How do I enroll?

Eligibility

Benefits must be offered through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), contract or salary resolution.  You must be in a permanently allocated position scheduled at least 32 hours per pay period (.40 FTE). Not sure if this applies to you? Review your employment offer or ask your supervisor the following questions;

  • What bargaining unit am I in?
  • What is my FTE (full time equivalent)?

Once you have this information, you can review the following resources for answers to all your questions.

Annual Enrollment is held in March each year for the upcoming June 1st to May 31st plan year. Generally, benefit premiums and County contributions change annually.  We encourage you to review the upcoming annual enrollment and premium information when making your election decisions.

New Employee Orientation

All new Full and Part time employees will attend New Employee Orientation (NEO).  During NEO you will hear from key departments that will provide you with resources for success.

Don't be shy!  NEO is a great opportunity to ask questions.  In our experience, if you have a question, others attending the presentation probably have the same question.

Extra Help?

Extra Help employees who meet the following eligibility requirements will be eligible to enroll in Medical.   

  • Scheduled to work at least 40 hours per pay period
  • Have worked at least 80 hours in the last two pay periods

Once you become eligible, the HR Benefits Unit will notify you by mail.
