About the Energy and Sustainability Division

The Energy and Sustainability Division of the County of Sonoma’s General Services Department promotes and delivers solutions necessary to mitigate environmental impacts and address climate change.

The Division’s core competencies include the challenging areas of greenhouse gas emission reduction through “buildings and behaviors”.  The central functions of the Division include tracking and reporting County operations’ internal utility services, facilitating reduction of internal greenhouse gas emissions, participating in regional coordination efforts, leveraging best practice and policy development efforts, educating the public about the benefits of upgrades, and offering workforce development opportunities.


  1. Our facilities achieve maximum efficiency and renewable generation profile resulting in a 'negative carbon footprint' with a 'net positive energy' by 2050.
  2. Reduction of energy use and demand in 10% of all existing buildings by 25% by 2020.
  3. Increase employee use of clean commute transportation modes to 25% by 2020.
  4. Every household and business in Sonoma County has been informed of the benefits of building retrofits, local generation, and the choice of preparing for climate change.
