Man Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison for Beating Pregnant Girlfriend

Santa Rosa,CA | February 02, 2021

Defendant Israel Fabian Fuentes, 34 years old of Santa Rosa, was sentenced earlier today  by the Honorable Shelly Averill to serve 9 years in state prison after pleading guilty in May of last year to charges of felony infliction of corporal injury on his pregnant girlfriend, the mother of his three year old child, and admitting an enhancement for causing great bodily injury.

District Attorney Jill Ravitch stated, "This was a vicious attack, made all the worse as it was perpetrated in front of a three year old child. Thankfully law enforcement was able to intervene before more harm could be done."

The charges resulted from an incident that occurred on February 21, 2020 when officers were dispatched to a residence for a reported domestic dispute involving Fuentes and the victim, who at the time was 25 weeks pregnant. When officers arrived on scene, the victim's roommate reported that Fuentes was actively striking Jane Doe. An officer entered after hearing yelling and discovered Fuentes barricading the victim inside of a bathroom.

After removing Fuentes from the bathroom and detaining him, officers located the victim next to the toilet, which had been completely uprooted. There was also a pool of blood on the ground. Further investigation determined that Fuentes had attacked the victim as she sat on the toilet, punching her 10 to 15 times in the face. As the victim fell to the ground Fuentes kneed her in the face four times, causing substantial injuries to her mouth, including completely disfiguring her top row of teeth. Following the attack Fuentes blocked the bathroom door and did not allow Jane Doe to leave.

The couple's three year old son, who was present during the assault, was found crying in the living room and told officers his "mama got hurt." The boy also told officers, "Go take him to jail. Go take papa to jail." At the time of his arrest Fuentes was also on formal probation for felony reckless evading and felony resisting arrest.

The case was investigated by the Santa Rosa Police Department, and prosecuted by Jessica Washington of the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.
