Voting System Replacement Project

Published:  May 7, 2018

Residents of Sonoma County were invited to respond to a survey and provide feedback about their experience with the current voting system, and provide opinions on the most important criteria to consider when evaluating and selecting a new voting system.

There were trends that stood out among the responses:

  • A strong preference for a paper-based system;
  • Security, accuracy, ability to check votes before casting a ballot, and ease of use topped the list of most important criteria for selecting a new system; and
  • Election laws that require testing of voting systems, ban connection to the internet, and allow the public to observe operations including a hand-tally to audit results, along with use of physical security measure like tamper-evident locks were among the top items considered to have the best affect in ensuring security and instilling confidence in the elections process.
