Responding to Homelessness in Sonoma County

The County has a strong commitment to provide a path to permanent stable housing for all people experiencing homelessness.  The Sonoma County Community Development Commission is the lead agency charged with preventing and ending homelessness.  The Commission works in partnership and close coordination with other local jurisdictions and non-profit service providers.

Who is homeless in Sonoma County?

Almost 3,000 people are homeless on any given night in Sonoma County. The Sonoma County Community Development Commission conducts a 24 hour “Homeless Count” every year.  The Count measures the impact of local homeless services.  For the past seven years, the number of people experiencing homelessness has been decreasing. This year, it is up 6%. The housing shortage following the October 2017 played a role in the increase.

An executive summary and full report of the 2018 Homeless Count is available online

What is the County doing?

Sonoma County offers centrally coordinated access to housing, shelter and services to end homelessness. The County follows a Housing First approach designed to quickly connect people in housing crisis to temporary and permanent housing, without barriers or conditions to entry. We prioritize the most vulnerable people, by identifying housing opportunities that respond to clients’ unique circumstances.
