    Today, the Board of Supervisors approved a request by County Clerk William F. Rousseau authorizing him to execute a contract with Dominion Voting Systems Inc. for a comprehensive, modern voting system. The new system known as “Democracy Suite version 5.2” will replace the county’s current 35-year old multi-card ballot and tallying system.

Residents are encouraged to take a brief survey to share their experiences with the current voting system; what they liked or disliked, and what they think are priorities to consider when selecting a new voting system.

    County Clerk William F. Rousseau has begun a special project to select a new voting system for Sonoma County. County Clerk Rousseau stated “I made it a priority in my final term in office to ensure Sonoma County modernizes and upgrades its voting system to the latest standards, using the most secure, accurate, and accessible technology available. We want to have new voting equipment for polling places and machinery for counting ballots beginning in 2019.”

    Recently, the Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor Department has become aware that the Sonoma County Clerk’s Office phone number (707-565-3800) has been used in a telephone number ‘spoofing’ scam, where the caller threatens Sonoma County residents with arrest for failure to pay money to individuals pretending to be government officials. Using a practice known as "caller ID spoofing," callers can deliberately falsify the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party.

    Today the United States Supreme Court dismissed the case challenging California’s ruling that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. This means the Appellate court will likely lift the stay; thereby authorizing marriage licensing and civil marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. David Rabbitt, Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Chairman, stated "I am pleased to know that the County is moving rapidly to comply with the United States Supreme Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriage Licensing and Civil Marriage Ceremonies."

    Due to a recovering local real estate market, Sonoma County residential property owners could see a restoration of prior property tax values. Since 2007, the Sonoma County Assessor’s office has been reviewing thousands of declines in response to property owner requests as well as proactively reviewing assessed values county-wide. More than 55,000 property values, approximately half of the residential properties in Sonoma County, were temporarily reduced under these provisions of the law.
