Santa Rosa, CA – December 13, 2013 – District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced
today that defendant Jose Escalante, 56, of Santa Rosa, was sentenced
on December 12, 2013, by the Honorable Judge Simonds to four years in
state prison. This was Escalante’s eighth DUI conviction, including
his third felony DUI conviction since 2010.
District Attorney Jill Ravitch stated:
“Repeat DUI offenders simply will not be tolerated in Sonoma County as
they place the whole community in harm’s way.”
The charge resulted from an incident on
July 9, 2013, when Santa Rosa Police officers were dispatched to a
collision that had occurred on Summerfield Lane in Sana Rosa. Mr.
Escalante had crashed his vehicle into a parked car, causing
significant damage to both vehicles. Upon contact with officers, Mr.
Escalante admitted he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol and his
blood-alcohol level was later determined to be over three times the
The prosecution argued that Mr.
Escalante’s pattern of drinking and driving caused him to be a
continuing danger on the roadway, placing the entire community in peril.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy
District Attorney Keith Shaw of the District Attorney’s Vertical DUI
Unit. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the
California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration. Officer Hiroshi Yaguchi of the Santa
Rosa Police Department headed the investigation.
