Eight-Time Drunk Driver Sentenced to Serve Four Years

Santa Rosa, CA  –  December 13, 2013  –  District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced today that defendant Jose Escalante, 56, of Santa Rosa, was sentenced on December 12, 2013, by the Honorable Judge Simonds to four years in state prison. This was Escalante’s eighth DUI conviction, including his third felony DUI conviction since 2010.

District Attorney Jill Ravitch stated: “Repeat DUI offenders simply will not be tolerated in Sonoma County as they place the whole community in harm’s way.”

The charge resulted from an incident on July 9, 2013, when Santa Rosa Police officers were dispatched to a collision that had occurred on Summerfield Lane in Sana Rosa.  Mr. Escalante had crashed his vehicle into a parked car, causing significant damage to both vehicles.  Upon contact with officers, Mr. Escalante admitted he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol and his blood-alcohol level was later determined to be over three times the legal limit.

The prosecution argued that Mr. Escalante’s pattern of drinking and driving caused him to be a continuing danger on the roadway, placing the entire community in peril.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Keith Shaw of the District Attorney’s Vertical DUI Unit.  Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Officer Hiroshi Yaguchi of the Santa Rosa Police Department headed the investigation.
