Evacuation Center Opened in Response to Sawmill Fire

Center will provide water, food, and shelter as needed

Santa Rosa, CA  –  September 25, 2016 at 6:10 PM  –  Emergency response agencies throughout Sonoma County are currently monitoring the Sawmill Fire, which began in Sonoma County at approximately 10:50 am today. The fire has burned approximately 500 acres off Big Geysers Road and Geysers Resort Road, 10 miles east of Cloverdale. Due to ordered evacuations, the County of Sonoma has opened an Evacuation Center with the Red Cross.

The Center, which opened at 5:00 pm, is providing water and food, and shelter if necessary.

Road closure information can be found on the County’s Transportation & Public Works at: http://roadconditions.sonoma-county.org/

Residents in the surrounding area are urged to stay vigilant, and prepare for possible evacuation. It is recommended that all residents prioritize their personal safety, and do not wait for an evacuation notification if they feel that their safety is at risk. 

The public is advised to avoid the area in order to facilitate emergency response. 

Exposure to smoke can trigger life threatening respiratory events in people that are sensitive or who have underlying heart or lung conditions. If you see or smell smoke, keep in mind the following:

  • Consider staying inside to avoid breathing smoke particles.
  • Run your air conditioner, making sure to keep the fresh air intake closed and the filters clean.
  • Do not run swamp coolers. They will pull smoky air in from outside.
  • Masks do no t protect your lungs from smoke particles.
