Comprehensive Planning Section’s Work Plan Presentation

On April 16, 2019 staff presented the Comprehensive Planning Section’s Work Plan to the Board of Supervisors to help set priorities for the 2019 through 2021 budget years. Since the last approved Work Plan, projects that have been completed include zoning code updates for housing, adoption and implementation of two Cannabis Ordinances, and development of the Sonoma County Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Substantial progress has also been made on:

  • Development Code Phase I changes
  • The Springs Area Specific Plan
  • The Airport Area Specific Plan
  • The Local Coastal Plan (LCP)
  • Cannabis
  • Housing Initiatives
  • Winery Event Policies
  • Scenic Landscape Unit Rezoning

In addition, staff presented potential new projects:

  • X Combining Zone Revisions/Refinements
  • Streamlining Planning Processes (Development Code Phase 2)
  • Coastal Zoning to Implement LCP (Legal Requirement)
  • Phase 2 Cannabis Regulations
  • Sonoma Developmental Center Planning Efforts
  • Southeast Santa Rosa/Santa Rosa Avenue Planning Efforts
  • Lower Russian River Area Planning
  • A Tree Ordinance Update
  • The General Plan update

After hearing the report and public comment on the proposed Work Plan on April 16, 2019, the Board directed staff to return to the Board on June 4, 2019 with further information about time commitments and financial resources for Work Plan priorities before the board finalizes the new projects with which they'd like to move forward.

About the Comprehensive Planning Section

The primary function of Comprehensive Planning is to develop and implement: the Sonoma County General Plan, Local Coastal Plan, and Area Plans or Specific Plans. In addition Comprehensive Planning staff work on special projects as directed by the Board of Supervisors and working in collaboration with other agencies and departments as community liaisons on many public projects and policy initiatives.
