    What is Cyber crime?

    Cybercrime is any violation of federal, state, or local statute, or malicious or suspicious activity, in which a computer, network or device is an integral component of the violation. Examples can include: a malicious cyber criminal breaking into a computer to steal information (computer intrusion) or to change a website (website defacement); malware being placed on a computer without the owner’s permission; and that malware using that computer’s resources to send spam.

This map is created by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) using advertised coverage and speed data provided by the internet providers, such as AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast.

    The IC3 has produced Scam Alerts in the past advising the public of an ongoing telephone scam in which callers purport to be an employee of a major software company. The callers have strong foreign accents. The callers report the user’s computer is sending error messages and numerous viruses have been detected. The caller convinces the user to give them permission to run a program allowing the caller to gain remote access. The caller advises the virus can be removed for a fee.

    The California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) in partnership with The Field Poll released results of a new survey examining the depth of the Digital Divide in California.

    The poll found that home broadband adoption rates have stagnated, leaving the hardest-to-reach Californians without an essential tool to access the educational, employment and civic engagement opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency. The statewide goal is to achieve 80% home adoption by 2017, with no single demographic group or region below 70%.

    On Sunday, August 3, 2014, at approximately 5:20 p.m., an aerial fiber-optic cable was severed along the Comptche-Ukiah road in Mendocino County. This road directly connects the town of Mendocino and the City of Ukiah, and is often used by logging trucks.
