Schools of Hope – Apply to Become a Tutor!

Help us make a difference through the Schools of Hope literacy program with just one hour per week…! We are accepting applications for County employees who are interested in tutoring children in reading through the Schools of Hope program. Join the nearly 200 County employees and volunteer in tutoring 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at participating schools. The tutoring is one-to-one and you will receive an orientation and the training needed to be a successful tutor. This program is on County time when tutoring during your regular work schedule. The program is open to all County employees and we encourage you to consider becoming a tutor.

Sign up to participate by August 11, 2017. Orientations will be held on August 21 and August 23. Tutoring will start in October 2017.

Note: If you are already a Schools of Hope tutor – you do not need to reapply to the program, but please discuss your continued participation with your supervisor.

About the Schools of Hope Program

  • One-on-one tutoring with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at participating schools, just one hour a week 
  • Participating employees tutor on paid County time during their regular work schedule
  • All county employees are encouraged to participate
  • Sonoma County partnership with Schools of Hope allows employees to join other community business and organizations in making a positive impact in Sonoma County
  • Supported and encouraged participation by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors 

Employee volunteer requirements:

  • Have discussed participation with their supervisor(s) and have authorization to participate
  • Able to commit to tutoring 30 minutes and travel time (typically not more than an hour a week), once a week, for a full school year cycle
  • Able to travel to and from a participating school
  • Willing to sign United Way's insurance waiver and volunteer agreement
  • Willing to undergo a background check which includes fingerprinting and screening for tuberculosis (conducted at orientation)
  • Able to attend a general program orientation and a site training at the school of your choice.
