Schools of Hope – Apply to Become a Tutor!

Join Schools of Hope in making a difference with just one hour per week! Now accepting new County tutors for the Spring 2018 school year. Register by December 29, 2017!

County of Sonoma employees can tutor 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at local schools. The tutoring is one-to-one and the employee will receive orientation and the training needed to be a successful tutor. You will become part of the 200 County employees that volunteer in the program. The program is open to all County employees and we encourage you to consider becoming a tutor.

Participating employees tutor students while on paid County time during their regular work schedule. Please review the County of Sonoma Schools of Hope Program Procedures before submitting your application to Sylvia Lemus in Human Resources.

Sign up to participate by December 29, 2017. County orientations will be held on January 23rd and January 25th, 2018. Tutoring will start in February 2018.

Note: If you are already a Schools of Hope tutor – you do not need to reapply to the program, but please discuss your continued participation with your supervisor.

About the Schools of Hope Program

  • One-on-one tutoring with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at participating schools, just one hour a week 
  • Participating employees tutor on paid County time during their regular work schedule
  • All county employees are encouraged to participate
  • Sonoma County partnership with Schools of Hope allows employees to join other community business and organizations in making a positive impact in Sonoma County
  • Supported and encouraged participation by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors 

Employee volunteer requirements:

  • Have discussed participation with their supervisor(s) and have authorization to participate
  • Able to commit to tutoring 30 minutes and travel time (typically not more than an hour a week), once a week, for a full school year cycle
  • Able to travel to and from a participating school
  • Willing to sign United Way's insurance waiver and volunteer agreement
  • Willing to undergo a background check which includes fingerprinting and screening for tuberculosis (conducted at orientation)
  • Able to attend a general program orientation and a site training at the school of your choice.
