Solar Goal

The County of Sonoma has a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction goal of 25% below 1990 levels by 2020.  One of our tools to meet this goal is by supporting the installation of large and small scale solar development.

In order to achieve this goal, several programs have been created to advance solar installations in Sonoma County:

Education and Outreach

The Energy and Sustainability division offers Home Energy Workshops and free in-office solar consultations in Sonoma County to assist in increasing the knowledge of those interested in solar electricity.

Home Energy workshops take place throughout the year and focus on energy efficiency, water conservation and solar PV installation.

The solar consultation service is available for both residential and commercial projects.   Consultations can occur at the beginning of the process to learn basics of solar or during the project evaluation process.  We can assist consumers with equipment and cost comparisons between proposals, and review the terms of multiple financing options

The Sonoma County Energy Independence Program (SCEIP) offers Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing for residential and commercial properties located in Sonoma County.  SCEIP financing pays for up to 100% of the project’s costs at a fixed interest rate and is repaid over a 10 or 20-year term as an assessment on your property tax bill.

Streamlined Permitting

Permitting for solar projects under 10kW in size throughout Sonoma County has been streamlined.  Local building inspectors, fire safety officials, and solar installers worked together to produce a newly revised, standardized rooftop solar permit and process that reduces administrative burden while satisfying the needs and requirements of all stakeholders.
