Man Convicted for Arranging to Meet Minor for Sex

Santa Rosa, CA  –  September 23, 2016  –  Defendant Nicholas James Perry, 37-years-old of Sebastopol, was found guilty by a jury Wednesday afternoon of two felonies, Penal Code section 288.4(b), (Arranging a Meeting with a Minor for the purpose of engaging in lewd and lascivious behavior), and Penal Code section 664/288.3, (Attempting to Send Harmful content to a Minor,) for offenses he committed during a law enforcement “sting” operation on June 20, 2014 in Santa Rosa.

District Attorney Ravitch stated, “With the emergence of online chat and commerce, this type of proactive law enforcement is a valuable tool against juvenile sex trafficking.  We are pleased with the outcome, and thank the jury for their service.”

The charges resulted from an undercover operation conducted by local law enforcement agencies aimed at individuals attempting to purchase commercial sex from juveniles.  Santa Rosa Police detectives placed an advertisement on the website MyRedbook.com (a site known for prostitution and escort services) in which they posed as a 13-yr-old prostitute.  The defendant contacted the phone number listed in the ad, via text message, and inquired about a price.  A detective responded to the defendant and a text conversation ensued.  During the conversation the defendant asked about prices for various sex acts, and sent explicit photos of himself.  Subsequently, the defendant showed up to a pre-arranged location, where law enforcement was waiting to take him into custody.

Sentencing will occur in Department 13 before the Honorable Patrick Broderick on November 3.  The maximum sentence the defendant could receive is four years and six months in state prison.  As a result of the convictions, Perry will be required to register as a sex offender for life, pursuant to Penal Code section 290.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Javier VacaThe Santa Rosa Police Department and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department headed the investigation.  Chris Mahurin of the Santa Rosa Police Department was the lead detective.
