Santa Rosa, CA – May 20, 2016 – District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced today that Ruben Manuel Muniz, 37-years-old, a resident of Santa Rosa, pled guilty today to voluntary manslaughter and admitted that he personally used a firearm. He will receive a 9 year prison sentence as a result of this plea.
District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This plea represents some measure of accountability for the defendant’s actions and will perhaps provide some solace to the victim’s family for this tragic 2003 killing.”
Muniz and the victim, Danny Christian Garcia, were reportedly good friends. During a night filled with drinking and driving around Santa Rosa, defendant and victim got into a verbal argument. Muniz and the victim stopped their car, got out, and continued to argue on the sidewalk at West 3rd Street and Malibu Circle. The subject of the argument is not known. During the argument Muniz shot the victim, Danny Christian Garcia, in the head at close range with a short barreled shotgun. Defendant drove away leaving victim to die on the sidewalk. The victim, a Santa Rosa resident, was 30 years old at the time of his death.
Sentencing is set for June 30, 2016.
The Santa Rosa Police Department was the primary investigating agency, assisted by the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Robert Waner.
