Man Sentenced to State Prison in Multiple Victim Sexual Assault Case
Santa Rosa, CA – October 20, 2016 – Thirty-one year old Jason Frederick Hulac of Santa Rosa was sentenced today to 10 years in state prison after having pled no contest in September to three counts of assault with intent to commit a sexual offense. The charges stemmed from three separate daylight attacks on women in 2015.The defendant was sentenced by Judge Jamie Thistlethwaite.
District Attorney Ravitch stated, “The three women in this case endured terrifying experiences at the hands of this sexual predator. His lengthy prison sentence is well-earned. Special praise should be given to the civilian witnesses that stepped-forward and helped to bring this man into custody.”
The assaults began on the afternoon of February 22, 2015 when Hulac grabbed a 22-year-old Santa Rosa woman from behind who was walking on the trails around Spring Lake. The victim managed to push him away and began running. Hulac caught up to her and pulled her pants partially down before she was able to break free again. When he came after her a third time and grabbed at her pants, she sat down, rolled into a ball and began screaming until the defendant ran away.
The second assault occurred on April 20, 2015 when a 32-year-old Windsor woman walked on a trail near Unocal Place and Round Barn Blvd in Santa Rosa on her lunch break. The defendant walked close to her and she yelled at him to get away. The defendant then grabbed her around her right arm, and the victim began trying to fight him off by striking him repeatedly in the face with her cell phone. As she fought him off, the defendant put his hand down the back of her pants and they both fell to the ground. He finally ran when the victim was able to start calling 911.
The third attack occurred on June 6, 2015 when a 40-year-old woman was walking in the area of Coffee Lane and Pine Meadow Drive in Santa Rosa. The defendant walked toward her and asked if he could hug her. When the victim said no, the defendant grabbed her by both arms and groped her breasts and genital area. A passing motorist saw the victim struggling with the defendant and turned her car around to help. As a result, the defendant released the victim and ran away. The victim was able to provide a description of the defendant, and a neighbor later provided video surveillance to the Santa Rosa police officers showing Hulac walking in the area.
In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, Hulac will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and may be subject to additional incarceration as a sexually violent predator. The three charges are also strike offenses.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Barbara Nanney and Chris Honigsberg. Detectives Chris Diaz, Stephen Bussell and other officers investigated the case for the Santa Rosa Police Department.
